CECC Prepares for upcoming cold front

Jonesboro, AR. — Jan. 2, 2025 —

As a cold front brings below-average temperatures to Northeast Arkansas, Craighead Electric Cooperative Corporation (CECC) is ramping up its preparations and encouraging members to do the same.

“Craighead Electric is well-prepared for significant weather events,” said interim CEO Mel Coleman. “We maintain a strong inventory of poles, transformers, and other materials for any weather event we may face. This is a great time to encourage our community to prepare just the same.”

Coleman emphasizes that while CECC is ready, it’s crucial for members to take proactive steps to prepare for potential winter weather impacts. “Preparation not only ensures safety and comfort during cold snaps but also helps minimize energy costs,” Coleman said.

Tips for Winter Weather Preparedness:

  • Stay Warm Safely: If using alternate heating sources like fireplaces or wood stoves, ensure they are properly ventilated and never left unattended. Avoid using gasoline- or propane-powered devices indoors.
  • Stock an Emergency Kit: Include non-perishable food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, and a manual can opener. Those relying on electricity-dependent medical devices should have a backup plan.
  • Monitor Outages: Keep your mobile devices charged and use the SmartHub app or call 888-771- 7772 to report outages. You can also enroll in outage text notifications by texting CECC to 85700. Stay informed through CECC’s social media pages.

Here are a few tips to help you stay energy-efficient in winter weather:

  • Seal Air Leaks: Use weatherstripping or caulk to seal windows and doors.
  • Manage Your Thermostat: Set it to a consistent, energy-efficient temperature, and consider lowering it slightly at night.
  • Inspect HVAC Systems: Ensure your system is serviced and filters are clean for peak efficiency.

“While CECC does not anticipate energy supply challenges, extreme weather and shifts in generation sources across the country could potentially lead to such measures,” Coleman explained. “We advocate for a balanced mix of generation sources, including reliable coal and natural gas, to ensure affordability and reliability for our members.”
